VEGETABLES:
Brassicas that are growing now will need protection from white butterflies and their caterpillars. Derris dust works a treat, and you can cover your rows with wire hoops covered in bird netting – this will stop the butterflies being able to land and lay their eggs.
Aphids will be out in full force – use some Neem and Garlic spray to keep them at bay. Planting pyrethrum (chrysanthemum cinerariifolium) in the edges of your beds will also help. The power is in their flowers – so let them flower.
Onions are ready to harvest once their tops are turning brown. To harvest, pull out the onions and leave them somewhere dry and sunny for a few days to dry completely. String them up in bunches to store in a cool dark place. Use ones with thick necks first as they will not keep.
FRUIT:
Grapes will now be starting to show some colour. At this stage it is important to keep the vine well watered to encourage nice plump fruit. Once the fruit is half ripe give the vines no more water until the vine is picked. To keep mildew away make sure your glasshouse is well ventilated.
For further reading, I really recommend all of these books. I own every one of them and they are amazing resources!
