I have noticed a nip in the air and the promise that summer really is over, sadly. This week in the garden is about tidying up the leftovers and sowing a few things for the winter table.

VEGETABLES
Any remaining cabbage, cauliflower and silverbeet/chard stalks should be pulled out of the ground unless you are planning on saving seeds from them.
Spinach, lettuce and turnips can be sown in warm, sheltered spots.
Onions from this season will need to be lifted shortly, try and pick a stretch of 3 or so fine days to let them dry out before storage. Bending over their tops will hasten their bulb maturity.
Keep weeding cabbage, leek and cauliflower beds to let them get well established before the old hits properly.
You can still sow parsley and silverbeet/chard.
FRUIT
Berries – tay, logan, boysen and black all need to be trimmed back after fruiting. Cut out from the base of the plant the spent canes, allowing new ones to grow in their place. Mulch with stable manure or compost at least 2 foot all the way around the plant.
Raspberries can have old canes cut out and the bunch tied up, removing weeds and suckers as you go. Leave 7-8 new canes per plant. Mulch as above.
