VEGETABLES
Once your first lot of peas are well up, sow a second round of them. Continue to sow them at fortnightly intervals for a longer harvest time.
Onions are best sown in Autumn in cooler areas, but you can still sow them now if you missed the autumn run. They need nice rich soil with plenty of manure and lime to give them a good head start. So the seeds no more that 1/4in/5mm deep and firm the soil over them.
Salad vegetables can be sown as soon as the mud stops clinging to your boots (ie the dirt is less muddy and more like damp soil). Turnip, radish, lettuce, spinach as well as brussels sprouts.
Leeks need a very long growing season, so they can be sown in trays this month for planting out later.
NZ Yams (Oca) can be planted now, sow in rows about 4-6in/10-15cm deep. Be sure to put them somewhere that they can occupy forever – you will NEVER get out every singe yam, they will continue to grow in that spot.
Tomato, pumpkin, courgette, cucumber can all be sown inside and planted out in late spring after every risk of frost has passed.
