Weekly Garden Diary: Autumn Week 6

This post was most recently updated on April 14th, 2017

We are nearly halfway through the Autumn already. I can definitely feel the coolness in the air, and the days are getting shorter very quickly. We have yet to have a frost yet this year, but I am sure it isn’t far away.

VEGETABLES

As the days get shorter, weeds are speeding up their growth cycle, trying to pop out as many seeds as they can. That means that if the day is fine, pop out and whip around with the hoe to keep on top of them.

Onion seeds can be sown in shallow drills 1ft / 30cm apart.

Garlic and shallots can still be lifted if you have not done so yet. Now is also a good time to plant your garlic if you are in cooler areas.

Thin spinach, carrots and turnips when the thinnings are big enough to eat.

Dig out the last of the main crop potatoes and store in a dark, dry place in a single layer. Use any damaged or bruised ones first.

FRUIT

Strawberries can still be planted in a nice sunny area of the garden. They like plenty of manure and a mulch to keep them moist. Something like pine needles are ideal as they are acidic.

For further reading, I really recommend all of these books. I own every one of them and they are amazing resources!
