Onions sown now won’t reach full size but are great if you like to pickle onions. Sow in rich soil and shallow rows. Any onions you did sow in autumn would appreciate a liquid fertilizer and maybe a top dressing of potash.
Beans should be starting to get tall enough to be staked, so if you didn’t plant them next to something, pop some bamboo stakes in next to the row and run strings along between them. Mulching your beans now is a good idea too to help retain the moisture and keep the weeds down.
Once your broad beans have some pods forming you can pinch out the tips of the plant, this gives you a better crop.
FRUIT
Rhubarb can be picked as it comes ready. A good mulch to keep the weeds at bay is always a good idea too.
Now is a good time to plant strawberries if you haven’t already. Strawberries that are in flower need some straw/pea straw or pine needles place underneath to keep the fruit off the soil so they don’t rot before they ripen.
