Weekly Garden Diary: Summer Week 11

This post was most recently updated on April 14th, 2017

As we are drawing near to the end of Summer, it is a busy time in the garden. Keep on top of the weeds, hoeing regularly. Pull out plants that have finished ( cabbage, lettuce and broccoli etc ) and throw them in the compost. If you want to harvest seeds, allow 3-4 of your best producers to go to flower.

VEGETABLES

Spinach, turnips and onions can be sown for winter use.

Thin late sown carrots and beetroot, allowing around 3-4 inches between each plant.

Keep your leeks well watered. Make regular sowings of mesclun salad mix and oriental vegetables.

Remove and rhubarb or sea kale flower heads before they emerge.

Trim seed heads from parsley, sage and thyme. Sowing parsley now will give you a crop for spring time.

FRUIT

Strawberries will be flowering again shortly for their second crop of fruit. Keep them well fed and watered to ensure a good crop.
