I have been a bit slack getting this week’s gardening post done – sorry! We are madly trying to get our house finished, so safe to say my garden is neglected right now. But if you are following along with our week by week series – here is what you should have done this week!

By now, some cooler areas may be waking to a touch of frost. It pays to keep a “first frost” diary marking when you get the first and last frost at your place. Year to year it may vary somewhat, but you will get to know when to expect them. I mark mine on my google calendar then set it to repeat each year. If you print off the Seed Sowing and Harvesting Guide you could mark yours on there.
Carrots can stay in the garden until the last week of winter.
Lettuce can still be sown in small volumes, in colder areas you may want to make these sowings in your glasshouse. Choose cold hardy types – there is a french variety called Rouge d’Hiver that does well in the cold.
Onions can be sown now to stand over winter. They love lime so sprinkle some around where you are planning on sowing them.
Cover frost tender plants and herbs with a large frost cloth at night to extend the time you can harvest from them.
Feed celery and cauliflowers with liquid manure. Cauliflowers that are getting larger can have their outer leaves folded in over their curd to protect it from yellowing in the sun.
Tomatoes may need wrapping in frost cloth to protect them against frost. Reducing watering and removing any leaves shading the crops will encourage the tomatoes to ripen quickly before the frosts come. Remove any flowers, side shoots and tiny fruit now to encourage ripening the one that are currently on the vine.
