This is a super easy Remineralizing Diatomaceous Earth Tooth Powder recipe. You may remember me sharing our homemade toothpaste recipe as an alternative to toothpaste that you can buy in the shops. If not, you can read about it here. It works just fine, don’t get me wrong, but my kids flat out refused to use it. And to be honest, I got sick of unblocking the drain from the coconut oil. That stuff can STICK.

My kids started brushing their teeth with only their toothbrushes to avoid the coconut oil paste substitute, so I figured there must be another option. And there is!

Tooth Powder – an Alternative to Toothpaste
Tooth powder is exactly what it sounds like, a mineral powder you use to brush your teeth. AND my kids will use it, quite happily. It is basically the coconut oil-based mix, without the messy oil. Also, it is not as gross to use as it sounds.
The ingredients:
Clay Powder – Diatomaceous Earth, Bentonite, or green french clay (each is slightly different, but have similar properties for this recipe). Clay powder helps to get your teeth nice and clean.
Calcium powder – Adds minerals to your teeth’s surface.
Baking soda (optional) – Aids in whitening and deodorizing.
Stevia powder (optional) – Makes the mix more palatable and ensures the kids will use it.
Peppermint essential oil. Or orange or cinnamon, whatever floats your boat.
How to Make Remineralizing Tooth Powder
It is deceptively easy. In a bowl put 2 tablespoons of clay powder and calcium powder.
Add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda if you like (my kids don’t like it, so theirs is soda free). You can add 2-3 teaspoons of stevia if you want to.
Drop in 5-10 drops of your favourite flavour – I suggest trying less first, add more if you need to. Mix the whole lot up very thoroughly – you could use a stick blender or food processor if you like.
Store in a small jar in the bathroom (or one each if you don’t like to share). To use simply dip a damp toothbrush into the powder and tap off the excess.
You could also add some activated charcoal to the blend if you would like. I would suggest 1-2 teaspoons would be plenty.
So there you have it, my alternative to toothpaste. Simple, pretty cheap and kid friendly. Do you use an alternative toothpaste product?
