Here are my 5 favorite vegetables that you can grow inside in pots or containers so you can have fresh vegetables all Winter long, no matter where you live.
If you have a spare windowsill, conservatory or space on the floor in the living room, then you are set to grow vegetables inside over winter!
Make sure the containers you use don’t have holes in the bottom or you will ruin your surface. Try large totes or rubbermaid bins. These hold a good depth of soil allowing the plants to grow well.
Fill the bins with good quality dirt or potting mix with a little compost mixed through. Dampen the soil thoroughly before planting or sowing.
5 Vegetables You Can Grow Indoors During Winter
1 Spinach
Spinach grows fast from seed and needs very little special care. You can cut it while it is little to use as a salad green then leave it to grow a bit bigger and use it to cook with. You can often cut spinach 4 or 5 times before it will try and bolt to seed.
2 Carrots
It seems a weird choice to try and grow carrots inside, but in a deep tub of dirt, they will grow wonderfully. Otherwise you can choose a ball variety which grows more like a radish.
Don’t forget to use the tops to make some carrot top pesto!
3 Lettuce
Lettuce is a great choice to grow in a pot indoors. Choose a loose leaf variety and keep picking the leaves as you need them. Keep well watered but not soggy and it will produce for a long time. Read this post for more on growing lettuce.
4 Peas
Peas work well either dangling from a hanging basket, or climbing up a frame – you choose what works best for your situation. There is nothing like the taste of sweet peas straight from the pod.
5 Radish
What’s not to love about radishes? The germinate easily, they grow fast, they are easy to care for, and they are a vegetable you can grow inside in winter. They add a nice bite to salads and are a healthy snack. Perfect really!
Personally during the winter we also start all our spring seedlings on a plastic table in the living room as well. The extra warmth, shelter and light from growing the vegetables in side makes them grow faster and earlier than they would in a glass house or cold frame.
This gives me good strong plants to plant out as soon as the frosts have passed.
